KOLKATA: Community market complexes across Salt Lake will soon get a facelift. The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has allocated Rs 2.5 crore funds this year to repair and renovate several markets, which have been in a bad shape.
There are many community markets across Salt Lake which are maintained by BMC. These are the AA, AB-AC, AE, CA, BD, BJ, CE, CK-CL, FB, FD, EC, GD, IA, IB block and Baisakhi markets.
"The infrastructure in some of the markets needs to be upgraded. Some of the markets have already been renovated while the work is due in some other markets. We have a budget allocation of about Rs 2.5 crore in this financial year. We will utilise to renovate at least four or five markets," said BMC MMiC Rajesh Chirimar who is in charge of markets.
Chirimar said that some markets like the IB block community market, FB market,Karunamoyee market and Baisakhi market need to be given a facelift. "The Baisakhi market needs to be upgraded like other community markets in Salt Lake," he said.
In many markets, collapsed chunks and dangling electric wires can be seen. Besides, the condition of toilets in some markets is deplorable. Chirimar said, "The GD block community market needs to be revamped thoroughly and we have sent a detail project report to the state government in this regard, seeking funds." Along with market renovation, BMC is planning to increase the fees collected from traders for transfer of shop space and renewal of lease.
