A man was stabbed to death on a busy street in northwest London after an argument broke out inside a Post Office, witnesses have said.

Police launched a murder investigation after a 22-year-old died in hospital following a stabbing on High Road, Wembley, just before 1pm on Monday.

Paramedics from London Ambulance Service took the victim out of the shop and battled to save his life on the roadside in front of horrified shoppers.

He was then rushed to hospital, where he sadly died.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A delivery driver who was working close to the scene said shoppers were running and taking cover.

He told the Metro: “It was terrifying, it was like they were running for their lives. Wembley is busy and there were mothers with prams and kids around – some people were screaming.”

He added: “The paramedics took him outside and were giving him chest compressions for ages. They worked very hard to save him.”

Forensic officers have been scouring the scene for clues, while detectives have been trawling through CCTV footage from the area. No arrests have yet been made.

A formal post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams said on Monday: “My thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones at this unimaginably difficult time.

Knife crime has a devastating impact on communities and our officers are here to support local residents with any concerns. Residents can expect to see an increased police presence over the next few days.

“In the meantime, our dedicated officers are working at speed to piece together this tragic incident. Anyone with relevant information should not hesitate to share it with us.”

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: “We sent resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer.

“We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London Air Ambulance. We treated the man at the scene and took him to hospital as a priority.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or to remain anonymous 0800 555111.
