Welsh Varsity 2020 called off over coronavirus outbreak

The 2020 Welsh Varsity has been cancelled as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

This year's event was due to take place in Swansea on April 29.

However, organisers have confirmed the 2020 edition of the competition will no longer take place due to the pandemic.

A statement from Welsh Varsity said: "As you may have seen from the media, whilst public gatherings have not been officially suspended, the advice from UK Government is that in order to best protect the wellbeing of the population, we should all now avoid non-essential social contact and unnecessary travel.

"Additionally, it has been confirmed that major events requiring the assistance of the emergency services will not be supported in the near future.

"As a result, and with a heavy heart we have taken the decision to cancel the Welsh Varsity event due to take place in Swansea in April. We feel this decision is in the best interests of our students, staff and guests.

"All ticket purchasers will receive a refund automatically, you don’t need to do anything. Whilst we will do this as quickly as possible, please allow three weeks for the payment to arrive back into your bank account.

"Unfortunately, we are unable to reschedule the Welsh Varsity this year but rest assured the event will return in 2021."

Writing on Twitter, Cardiff Uni RFC said: "Disappointing but absolutely the correct decision to cancel @TheWelshVarsity in light of the Corona crisis.

"We will look after the cup for another year. #Winners #WelshVarsity #TeamCardiff."

Varsity has been an ever-present on the sporting calendar for both Swansea University and Cardiff University since it began in 1997.
