Welsh rugby team's pre-season drinking challenge goes very wrong

Belly-first down a slip-and-slide, neck a pint and make your way back to your team. What could possibly go wrong?

A new pre-season challenge is doing the rounds among Welsh rugby's amateur clubs, and one Blaina RFC player ended up in a bit of a pickle

Llanelli Wanderers started the new trend earlier this month, uploading a brilliant clip to Twitter as teams headed back for pre-season training. The challenge involves members of the team going head-to-head in a drinking race, otherwise known as a 'boat race'.

As you can tell, you take the slip-and-slide down to a table full of pints, neck yours and then slide back. The positioning of the table is key here, and the boys from Blaina didn't quite get it right. One of the boys launched himself down the track with admirable gusto, but his speed was too much as he crashed into the table of pints, sending them flying.

Like a true pro, though, he still managed to find the one that remained, duly downing the beverage to complete his challenge.

Llanelli's Twitter clip has amassed over 160,000 views since being posted, whilst the hilarious Blaina clip has 30,000 views in just three days. Viewers have been loving the trend and have pointed out how great it is for team building.

"This is what amateur rugby is all about- brilliant team building sessions." said one.

"This is how European knockout matches should be decided, if scores level at the end of extra time," joked another.

Other Welsh clubs are also getting involved, and it has also made its way across the Severn, with Northampton BBOB RFC have submitting their own effort. Garndiffaith RFC have even challenged Blaina to a team v team version at their league fixture!

Blaina RFC highlighted how important it is to have fun as a team by doing something other than rugby.

"A big part of our club is to build on fun and connection with others. The lads have been working really hard throughout pre-season so we hosted a Blaina Olympics social event on Saturday."

"It was brilliant to do something different away from rugby and as you can see the lads loved it!"

Llanelli said they almost wiped out their pints too, after talking on the Blaina spillage.

"Expensive mistake, almost happened with us until we moved the bench back and to also avoid injury!"
