Welsh rugby debate as Amazon Prime targets broadcast rights for Wales' autumn internationals

The revelation that Wales' long-awaited autumn internationals could move onto a paid-for online streaming platform was certainly met with some passionate responses.

Reports emerged last week saying retail giant Amazon had opened talks about broadcasting the looming Eight Nations tournament, which would represent a huge move away from rugby being shown on the traditional outlets of BBC, Sky, BT Sport and ITV.

With Amazon already having begun to cover Premier League football, they are said to want to move into top-level rugby, although WalesOnline understands no TV rights deal has yet been struck for the competition.

As it’s a new event, it’s open to all broadcasters and subscription channel Amazon Prime looks set to make a big entry into the rugby market.

Fans seem to fall into one of two categories: those who believe the international game being available on free-to-air TV is too important for the growth of the game to compromise, while others recognise there is a financial hole to be plugged especially after the coronavirus pandemic.

We want to know how you feel about the proposed switch to Amazon Prime? Would you pay to watch it? Should Wales' autumn Tests be on free-to-air TV - and why? Is this a sign of things to come?

Wales are expected to play a warm-up away to France on October 24, followed by the rescheduled Six Nations clash against Scotland on October 31.

Then the Eight Nations fixtures would kick in, with Wayne Pivac's side due to face England, Ireland and Georgia in one pool (the other is made up of France, Scotland, Italy and Fiji). At the end of the group stage, Wales would have one more match, against a team from the other pool, on the weekend of December 5.

Georgia had taken Japan's place in the tournament, with speculation that South Africa would be involved proving to be unfounded. You can see the full schedule here.
