The Dragons are set to get extra funding from Welsh rugby chiefs after taking some 'unexpected financial hits' since the WRU took control of the region two years ago, according to reports.
The Rodney Parade outfit continue to be Wales' most underachieving region.
But in a bid to pep their fortunes, Dean Ryan has been brought in from the Rugby Football Union to be the director of rugby and Wales outside-half Sam Davies signed up from regional rivals the Ospreys.
Having also recruited Tom Griffiths from Saracens, The Rugby Paper are reporting the Dragons, who the WRU took control of in the summer of 2019, have asked the governing body for more financial assistance to bolster the playing ranks further.
It's claimed the windfall has been given the green light by the Professional Rugby Board, which comprises of representatives from the four regions and the WRU.
And it raises questions whether Wales' three other regions would get a similar financial boost should they ask for it.
WRU group finance director Steve Phillips, who is also a Dragons board member told The Rugby Paper: "We've had the Dragons for coming up to two years now and being honest, I would say we are behind plans.
"We've taken a couple of financial hits while we've bedded it down. Some were expected and some weren't."
WRU chief executive Martyn Phillips added: "One of the conversations we've had as a PRB is that at any one point, one of the regions will need something over and above the norm.
"We have to have the flexibility to step in and help if needed, but at the same time it might be someone else next year."
