Weekly coronavirus deaths in England and Wales pass 1,000 for first time since June

A total of 1,379 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending October 30 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

It is first time the weekly coronavirus death toll figure has been above 1,000 since the week ending June 12.

It is also the highest number of deaths involving Covid-19 since the week ending June 5.

The total is up from 978 deaths in the week to October 23 – which represents a jump of 41 per cent.

And the North West had 446 deaths involving the virus registered in the same week - the highest number for our region since the week ending May 15.

In Yorkshire and the Humber, 204 Covid-19 deaths were registered in the week to October 30: the highest since the week to June 5.

England is currently subject to a national lockdown which has seen pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and gyms shut as a bid to reduce the number of cases. It is scheduled to end on December 2.

The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, said earlier today that he had written to GPs to prepare them for a mass roll out of a coronavirus vaccine from as early as next month.

It comes as a vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech was reported to be 90 per cent effective.

But it is yet to be approved by the regulators.
