One of the world’s richest men, Jeff Bezos, was reportedly forced to change his Venice wedding venue this week following protests from locals.
Mr Bezos, who this weekend is set to marry US TV presenter Lauren Sanchez, faced backlash from locals who claimed the $48million star-studded ceremony was “taking over the city”.
Here’s what the papers had to say about it.
Daily Mail
“For today’s super-rich, Venice might as well be Vegas,” writes Sarah Vine. “They’ve about as much regard for the culture and traditions of the place as Disney has for historical accuracy.”
New York Times
“Some residents lament that Amazon parcels delivered by boat have helped shutter local stores, while the gig economy’s promise of instant gratification has further rendered Venice unviable for many.”
What we say
Critics claim the Bezos-Sanchez wedding has reduced the city — already struggling with overtourism — to little more than a flashy backdrop. Centuries ago, Venice set the standard for sumptuous ostentation. This weekend will be no different.
