Week 5 Revisited: How Derek Carr and the Raiders beat Kansas City

Week 11 of the NFL season provides football fans with a fascinating rematch on Sunday Night Football. When the Kansas City Chiefs visit Las Vegas to take on the Raiders not only will a longtime AFC West rivalry be renewed, but it will give the Raiders a chance to give the Chiefs only their second loss of the season, after beating them back in Week 5.

In that victory, Derek Carr and the Raiders passing game showed the ability to get more vertical. The Las Vegas quarterback completed 22 of 31 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns, against one interception, and posted an NFL passer rating of 126.7 in the 40-32 victory. That week, Carr also averaged 9.0 Intended Air Yards (IAY) per passing attempt, well above his average of 6.3 from 2019 and above his current 2020 average of 7.8.

In this video breakdown, we’ll see how Carr connected with receivers downfield, some breakdowns in the Kansas City secondary, and perhaps a flavor for what to expect Sunday night:

Back in Week 5 this game was a bit of a shootout, with the Raiders coming out on top. Given the COVID-19 concerns on the defensive side of the football for Las Vegas, they might need to win in a shootout again. As we saw just a few weeks ago, they have done it before.
