Wednesday season 2 part 2 solved a long-running Addams Family mystery – and I really wish the hit Netflix show hadn’t

Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia and Luiz Guzman as Gomez, with Thing perching on Gomez's shoulder.

This article contains spoilers for all of Wednesday season 2 part 2.

Wednesday season 2 part 2 is now streaming on Netflix and I had high hopes for it after plenty of fun social media teasers. While I did enjoy most of it, I found myself feeling disappointed by a major change to the Addams Family lore.

I still maintain that Wednesday is one of the best Netflix shows and I am excited to see where Wednesday season 3 goes, but in a way, it makes this lingering feeling of disappointment worse. Everything else about the series was brilliant, from the casting and family dynamics to the costumes and score.

But in the show's tense finale, Thing, the family's mysterious disembodied hand got an origin story no one really asked for. Part of the appeal of Thing is that he's mysterious. He's been with the family for a while and is surprisingly lovable.

I love Victor Dorobantu, the actor that plays the Thing (yes, it's someone's real hand if you didn't know) and firmly believe he gave a standout performance throughout the latest installment. Managing to make a hand of all things that expressive is no easy task, but he's delivered some of the funniest and emotionally-driven moments in the show.

But Addams Family fans have widely accepted that Thing just exists. He didn't need explaining, and yet in season 2, we learned a shocking twist about who he originally belonged to. I won't allow it to completely ruin Wednesday for me, but I have to admit I'm disappointed.

An answer to a question nobody asked

To recap, we learned that Thing is the severed right hand of Isaac Night, and Morticia had cut it off when she saved Gomez from near death at his hands decades ago.

Morticia and Gomez had hidden this truth from the family, but when Isaac was resurrected, he wanted it back. Some fans enjoyed this twist and that Thing is a part of the season 2 villain, but I found it very unnecessary.

Isaac was already a big enough threat without this bit of lore, in my opinion. Being closely linked to Tyler, the unstable Hyde, made for a compelling story. I really enjoyed how Pugsley's strange zombie friend Slurp was actually Isaac Night, and that he's Tyler's uncle.

Dragging Thing into it made matters more convoluted than they needed to be, feeling like an unnecessary twist in the tale, which weighed down an otherwise strong finale.

Thing had no memory that he belonged to Isaac, which is why he stayed as part of the Addams Family for as long as he did. But now we know whose body he once belonged to, that air of mystery is gone, and myself and other fans have had a lot to say about it.

It might be hard for fans to separate Thing from Tyler's uncle Isaac now, and I'm hoping that Wednesday season 3 will be good enough for us to forget this huge change to his story.

Thing remains my favorite character despite just being a severed hand, he's always so entertaining to watch. I did enjoy season 2 overall and think this is a very strong Tim Burton series, so I'm sure I'll get over this twist in time.

If nothing else, I'm very glad Thing broke free from his original body and chose to join the Addams Family willingly. The show wouldn't be the same without him.
