Inspector George Gently
8pm, BBC1

Peter Flannery’s well-crafted police procedural returns with an episode that explores 1960s attitudes towards sex and sexual violence. Cue John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby), a character whose principal purpose is so often to hit the wrong note when compared to his streetwise boss (Martin Shaw), descending to a new nadir as he conducts a witness interview: “Who’s been raping you then, pet?” What unfolds is the tale of the hunt for a killer, plus Gently has a health scare and Bacchus is consumed by an affair. Nick And Margaret: The Trouble With Our Trains
9pm, BBC2

Nick and Margaret from The Apprentice say a lot with a furrowed brow, and this film about the UK’s disastrous rail network allows them plenty of opportunities to do so. The first half tells personal stories of commuters such as Lydia, who pays £5,000 a year to commute on a train that is always late. The real action begins in the second half, when the pair produce their notebooks and slide rules to figure out who profits from her pain, and how. John Robinson

Newzoids
9pm, ITV

More Punch and Judy politics as the would-be satirical puppet show continues. Newzoids may never escape the shadow of Spitting Image but it doesn’t skimp on the sketch count, rattling through character assassinations, pop-culture mashups and song parodies at a fair old clip. If the political material sometimes lacks bite, at least the writers are taking advantage of the material at their doorstep: when it’s skewering ITV’s own Ant & Dec, Broadchurch or Jeremy Kyle, Newzoids generates an appreciable transgressive charge. Graeme Virtue

Blue Bloods
9pm, Sky Atlantic

The first of a two-parter of this staunchly pro-police series, which acts as a fictional counterbalance to the bad press US cops are currently enduring. Dedicated NYPD deputy chief Kent and his wife are ruthlessly gunned down in a gangland-style hit, prompting Frank to move heaven and earth in tracking down his colleague’s killer. Meanwhile, Danny and Baez risk their own lives as they look in on deadly crew member Mario Hunt. Guest appearances from Dennis “24” Haysbert and Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man. David Stubbs

Peter Kay’s Car Share
9.30pm, BBC1

Peter Kay’s new comedy sees him play supermarket worker John, who is forced to share his journey to work with Kayleigh (Sian Gibson). The first trip doesn’t go well, with Kayleigh spilling her urine sample in his face. But things improve as she entertains him with her Cilla Black and Miss Piggy impressions while he reluctantly warms to her chat and penchant for local radio. Gentle comedy, with both of them capturing the understated nature of a revelatory car journey with someone you barely know. Continues on Thursday. Hannah Verdier

Big Giant Swords
10pm, Discovery

Irishman Mike Craughwell lives in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts and supports his family by custom-designing and building fearsome, wildly impractical weapons for fantasy enthusiasts around the world. With his tangled mane of hair and steampunk breathing apparatus, the star of Discovery’s entertaining new reality show resembles Bill Bailey in some sort of dystopian Mad Max future. And that’s even before he starts road-testing his creations by setting them on fire and slicing through gasoline-filled coconuts. GV

Inside No 9
10pm, BBC2

Series two of Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s darkly comic anthology comes to a close with a suitably spooky instalment. Tina, an unassuming phone shop employee, enters a looming Victorian villa bearing the titular number, following an instruction to visit the mysterious medium Madam Talbot. Once inside, it soon becomes clear that unseen forces have been preparing for her visit. A fitting end to a second series that has excelled at times. One can but hope a third set of nines is to follow. Mark Jones
