A violent drug user who brutally murdered a grandmother in a frenzied knife attack at her flat was jailed for life today.

Crack cocaine -fuelled Norman Duncan stabbed Margaret Robertson, 54, at least 25 times during the fatal assault.

A judge told Duncan, 43: "This was a sustained and merciless attack inflicted upon a defenceless woman in her home."

Lord Harrower ordered at the High Court in Edinburgh that the murderer must serve 20 years in prison before he is eligible to seek parole.

Gangster Ian "Blink" MacDonald has claimed one of Scotland's most notorious gangland feuds began over a stolen drug stash.

The convicted bank robber said Paul Ferris, 58, asked him to sell a consignment worth tens of thousands of pounds which actually belonged to Arthur Thompson snr.

MacDonald, 60, said the war between Ferris and Thompson, nicknamed The Godfather, began when the betrayal emerged.

National Insurance threshold increase to £12,570 could see people lose access to vital credits for State Pension

Rishi Sunak has announced that the National Insurance Contributions starting threshold will rise by £3,000 to £12,570 from July, meaning employees across the UK will keep more of what they earn before they have to start paying personal tax.

The cut, worth over £6 billion, will benefit almost 30 million working people with a typical employee saving over £330 in the year from July 1.

The Chancellor hailed it as the single biggest tax cut for a decade. He said: "Around 70 per cent of all workers will have their taxes cut by more than the amount they'll pay through the new levy."

Martin Lewis has issued a stark warning to every energy customer in the UK paying their gas and electricity bills by Direct Debit.

The consumer champion took to social media on Tuesday to advise anyone considering cancelling their energy supplier Direct Debit payments in an effort to keep their finances under control not to do so as it could actually increase their monthly outgoings.

Writing on his official Twitter and Facebook accounts, Martin said: “WARNING! Many talking about cancelling energy Direct Debits to 'keep in control' and just pay when billed. Yet be aware that's usually charged at a HIGHER RATE.”
