Weather warning for Monklands as snow returns

Monklands residents are being warned to get set for more winter weather disruption this weekend, with a yellow alert being issued by the Met Office.

The area again woke up to snowfall this morning; and forecasters are warning of snow and icy conditions on Saturday.

A weather warning for “a band of heavy snow” is in place from 3am until 9pm that day, noting the possibility of travel disruption and injuries from slips and falls on untreated surfaces.

The Met Office says of Saturday’s alert: “An area of rain pushing eastwards is expected to turn snow in places as it encounters colder air across Scotland and parts of northern and eastern England.

“At first the main hazard may be rain falling onto frozen surfaces leading to ice, especially on higher level routes – however, snow becomes more likely during the early morning.

“Heavier snowfall is more likely above 200m in Scotland and northern England, where 5-10 cm of snow may accumulate, possibly 20cm on highest routes.”

Bookmakers Coral have slashed the odds on this winter being the coldest in Scotland’s history amid fears of a new Beast from the East, the major snowfall which brought the country to a standstill three years ago.

The new weather warnings follow a recent cold snap which saw temperatures plunge and caused treacherous road and underfoot conditions on streets across Airdrie and Coatbridge.

North Lanarkshire Council tweeted this morning that the wintry conditions across the authority area “has had an impact on today’s household bin collections”, saying: “Please leave your bin out and we will get to them as soon as we can.”
