The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an active monsoon phase across north, east and northeast India for the next six to seven days, with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning expected in several states.
The weather department has predicted increased rainfall activity in Delhi, Mumbai, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan, while west-central and south Peninsular India are likely to experience comparatively weaker monsoon conditions during the same period.
IMD issues heavy rainfall alert for several states
According to the IMD, southwest monsoon activity is expected to strengthen across northern, eastern and northeastern regions over the coming week. Several areas may witness heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning during this period.
The department has warned of intense rainfall in parts of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Rajasthan, while rainfall is expected to remain below normal in west-central and southern parts of the peninsula.
Delhi weather forecast: Yellow alert issued
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, predicting light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms at isolated locations on Tuesday.
The southwest monsoon is expected to become active again over the national capital after an extended break, bringing cooler weather conditions over the next two days.
Mumbai, Maharashtra to witness stronger monsoon activity
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is likely to experience an increase in monsoon activity, with moderate rainfall expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. Heavy rain at isolated places has been forecast for Thursday.
Thane may receive heavy rainfall at isolated locations on Wednesday and Thursday, while Palghar is expected to see light to moderate rain with thunderstorms before heavier showers later in the week. Raigad is likely to record the strongest rainfall activity, with heavy rain expected at a few places on Thursday.
West Bengal faces heavy rain and flood risk
The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in northern districts of West Bengal over the next two days due to an active southwest monsoon.
Authorities have cautioned about possible landslides in hilly regions and flash floods in low-lying areas. South Bengal districts, including North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram, are likely to receive heavy rain between July 21 and 23.
Thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph are also expected in parts of the state.
Kolkata weather: Rainfall activity likely to increase
Kolkata is expected to receive intermittent rainfall from Tuesday, with showers likely to intensify through the week.
Authorities have advised residents and fishermen to stay updated with weather forecasts.
Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh under heavy rain watch
The IMD has warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of Uttarakhand over the next few days.
In Himachal Pradesh, a red alert has been issued for parts of the state, with very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall expected at isolated locations in four to five districts on Tuesday.
Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan monsoon forecast
Tamil Nadu's Western Ghats districts are likely to receive moderate rainfall until July 24, according to the IMD. Other parts of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, may witness isolated light to moderate showers.
In Rajasthan, monsoon activity is expected to revive from July 21. Eastern and northern parts of the state are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall from Tuesday, while western Rajasthan may see increased rainfall activity from July 25.
Monsoon revival expected after prolonged break
The IMD said the southwest monsoon is set for a significant revival after a prolonged period of subdued activity. The renewed rainfall phase is expected to begin over northeast India before spreading gradually to eastern, central and northern parts of the country.
The weather department expects active monsoon conditions to continue across north, east and northeast India over the next week, while west-central and south Peninsular regions may continue to experience weaker rainfall activity.
