Weather phenomenon is why many people across Ireland are waking up to dirty cars in recent days

Many of you will have noticed something awfully strange about your vehicle in the last few mornings.

Despite the relatively good weather, there has been a layer of 'dirt' appearing all across the island on cars, vans and buses.

Mainly on the roof, windows and windscreen, there is an easy explanation thankfully.

A combination of south eastern winds and a rare 'Saharan' weather event has caused dust particles from the desert to sweep north across Europe.

That has seen red skies and dust storms across Spain, France, Germany and even Ireland, with some experts believing the clouds could even reach Denmark.

Alan O'Reilly of CarlowWeather explains: "A few showers overnight brought down plenty of Sahara dust from atmosphere which has been carried in those Southeast winds. The car washes will be busy this week"

And while the dust is set to leave the island in the next few days, the temperatures will stay.

Sunny weather will stick around to at least the weekend after a dominant system from the Atlantic means that high pressure reigns.

In fact, temperatures will reach the high teens in some spots, with Irish people being able to whip out the barbecue to celebrate Mother's Day on Sunday if current indications are to be believed!
