Weather forecast: Yellow weather warning as thick fog set to descend on London

Temperatures are set to plunge overnight in London as the Met Office issues a yellow fog warning that could disrupt UK flights on Tuesday.

The Met Office said temperatures could hit below freezing while a thick fog will descend on London from 7pm on Monday until noon on Tuesday.

Forecasters said areas of mist and fog are likely to prove slow to clear on Tuesday lunchtime persisting all day in some spots.

But they added that the mercury will gradually climb from sub-zero to a maximum of 9C in the capital with some sunny spells expected.

The Met Office warned that the fog could create “delays or cancellations to flights”, and disruption at airports including, Stanstead, Heathrow and Gatwick.

Fog causes air traffic controllers to extend the amount of time they leave between planes taking off and landing.

The forecaster also advised road users: “Drive very slowly with dipped headlights, full-beam lights reflect off the fog causing a ‘white wall’ effect.

“Keep an eye on your speed, fog can give the illusion of moving in slow motion.

“Use fog lights, but remember to turn them off when the visibility improves.

“Don’t hang on the tail lights of the car in front, rear lights can give a false sense of security.”

It also added: “Watch out for freezing fog which is made of water droplets that freeze on contact with objects such as the pavement, road, car, etc. It can quickly form a layer of ice.”
