We went to check if Lidl actually stopped you from unlocking your car - this is what we found

Here at Bristol Live, we go right to the heart of the story.

So when I heard the reports of car key fobs malfunctioning at Kingswood's Lidl, there was only one thing on my mind.

Thinking nothing of the risks – the office car being marooned in the Halls Road car park – I launched an investigation that would put Woodward and Bernstein to shame.

Bristol Live reported last week that at least 12 people had been unable to unlock their cars after leaving them in the supermarket's car park.

Accompanied by our trusty photographer Dave, I drove Bristol Live's Vauxhall Corsa there to find out if the key fob would be affected.

In a bid to create a typical Lidl shopping experience – and get my dinner – I entered the supermarket and bought a "deluxe" spinach and ricotta ravioli.

I returned to the car park, having reached the moment of truth – was I to be stranded in South Gloucestershire?

No, as it turned out. The fob unlocked the car just as normal.

I parked the Corsa in a few different spaces around the car park, just to be sure – I don't do half-measures – but the result was the same.

Not everyone has been so lucky.

Retired police officer Graeme Wakerley first noticed the problem when he went to do his shopping in January.

He was able to lock his car upon arrival, but when he returned to his car he found his key fob wasn't working.

The 65-year-old said: "It's bizarre. I assumed the batteries were flat as you would in that situation.

"My son brought a spare and that didn't work either."

It has also happened the other way round, where a customer has arrived at Lidl and been unable to lock their car.

Shoppers shared their own experiences of the fault on the Kingswood Residents Facebook group.

A Lidl spokeswoman said: "Since being made aware of this anomaly, which we have not experienced in any of our other stores across the country, our store management team have been working hard to identify the cause.

"Whilst it does not appear that the interference is being caused directly from our store, we are engaging closely with the local community and other businesses in the area to try and resolve the situation as quickly as possible for customers."
