We've all been charging our phones wrong, according to an expert

Waking up with a fully charged battery is convenient for us all, it allows us to browse social media during our commutes, connect with our friends and family and even play games when we have downtime. While having a fully charged phone is convenient it can cost us money in the long run, as we will need to replace our phone's battery or get a new phone sooner than we need too.

Ciaran Lee a mobile gaming expert from Casinos.win explains that charging your phone in full is often the reason why your phone's battery seems to get worse over time. But it doesn't have to be that way explains Ciaran, and by switching your charging routine you can make your phone last longer.

Phone batteries degrade over time and they should last around 3 to 5 years, charging your phone to full capacity overnight will significantly cut down on your phone's lifespan.

Ciaran says "Lithium-ion batteries which are in smartphones are degraded by charging, heat and their age. They don't like to be fully charged and by making a few small changes to the way you charge your phone you can help maintain the battery and keep your phone for longer."

Every time you charge your phone to 100% you complete a charging cycle, and your phone will be designed to carry out a set number of cycles before you have to replace your battery.

To maintain battery health your phone shouldn't go below 20% or above 80%. If you charge your phone overnight you are going to charge your phone to 100% battery level which will complete a full charging cycle.

Putting your phone on charge by the side of the bed when you go to sleep is convenient, but if you want to save yourself from replacing your phone earlier than you need to then you should switch to day charging.

When you get up and start getting ready for the day you can charge your phone and keep an eye on the battery levels, this will help you to not overcharge your phone. Manually checking your phone can be a chore though so there are some hacks you can do to help you with this.

Ciaran says "Checking if your phone is at a certain battery charge is going to become tiresome very fast, instead of checking your phone manually you can set up an automation on newer phones which alerts you when your battery percentage goes below or above a certain level."

To set up automation on an iPhone to alert you when your battery falls below 20% or reaches 80% you need to go to the shortcut menu, then select automation, next click on battery level and finally set up an alert when the battery level falls below 21%. You will then need to do the same when the battery level reaches 80%.

Not charging your phone overnight may cause you to use your phone when charging, but this is equally as problematic as it causes something known as mini-cycles where parts of your phone's battery are depleted and recharged causing quicker degradation to the phone's battery.

Ciaran says "Using your phone while charging it will cause the phone to become hot and cause damage to your battery. Ideally, you should charge your phone when it's either in low power mode or idle."

Most modern phones will have inbuilt settings which will allow you to optimise your mobile phone's battery life. Manufacturers such as Google, Apple, Samsung and OnePlus use a variety of methods such as learning what time you go to bed to delay charging, or some will even stop charging past 80% if you turn the correct settings on.

"Mobile phone contracts increase year on year and being able to keep your phone for a little longer will help us save some money on our bills. Switching from nighttime charging to day charging may seem inconvenient at first but after a few days it will seem like you have always done it." Says Ciaran.
