We tried The Spicery’s curry kit in honour of National Curry Week

With curry being adopted as a national dish of the UK, it's no surprise so many of us love it.

This week is National Curry Week (all the way until Sunday) so it's only right that we dig in and find some of the best curry options on the market.

Georgie Hughes tried out The Spicery’s Friday Night Curry Discoverer kit and really enjoyed it - this was her take:

In honour of this week I tried The Spicery’s Friday Night Curry Discoverer kit which was a lot of fun, as I got to cook dishes I’d never made before.

The Spicery was the first to start a recipe subscription box service all the way back in 2006, sending out boxes with new recipes, spices and seasoning to its customers monthly.

When my kit arrived, it came with the recipe and spices for a Mangalore chicken sukka with goli bhajis and coconut chutney. That might sound pretty intimidating but it wasn’t as hard as it sounds.

The best part was the goli bhajis – a fried mixture of flour, yoghurt, coriander and cumin seeds. I’d never made them before and had my first try at deep frying which thankfully didn’t end up in a trip to the hospital.

Bhajis are always a treat and these ones were particularly good, as it always tastes just a bit better when you make it yourself.

The best part of using the kit was getting to make the goli bahjis (Georgie Hughes)

As I’m vegetarian, I replaced the chicken for Quorn in the curry, which worked really well. The sauce was definitely on the heated side which was perfect for me, as I love spicy food.

The coconut chutney was also new to me and I was pleasantly surprised. It was fresh and a little zingy and helped to cool down the richer flavours of the curry.

One thing I admit did not work for me was the dahl. I really enjoy dahls when I go out for a meal, but I’d never made one myself before.

The coconut chutney was tangy and worked well with the other flavours (Georgie Hughes)

I followed the instructions correctly, I thought, but it turned out really dry and claggy, so a top tip from me is to add more water and keep checking on it!

There were quite a lot of things to juggle with this meal, so allow yourself plenty of time to get it all done and leave everything on a low heat.

Overall, The Spicery’s curry kit was great. I really enjoyed cooking the recipe and trying out the new dishes.

There’s so much included in the box and I didn’t need to spend a lot of money on ingredients either, which is always a win.

You can order a three month Friday Night Curry subscription box or a six month subscription box today.
