Of course your favorite homoerotic 80s movie has its own day! And today is Top Gun Day, a celebration of all things Top Gun! Or, as I like to call it, an excuse to talk about the Top Gun: Maverick Dog Fight Football scene.
The Top Gun fandom has become a lot of millennial women obsessed with these men who don’t know how to communicate with each other and are you surprised? I loved Ice (Val Kilmer) as a kid and Hangman (Glen Powell) as an adult. It’s just part of all of our identity at this point. But on days like today, May 13th, we get to share that love of our favorite aviators with other fans!
According to the official website, Top Gun Day is like “talk like a pirate day, only way cooler because it allows you to quote Top Gun all day long, wear aviator sunglasses (no matter how cheap), pretend you’re a fighter pilot (‘it’s time to buzz the fridge’), play volleyball in jeans, and drink Hemlock–wait, wait–I mean ICE water.”
Participating in the brilliant day is simple: Literally just use the hashtag #TopGunDay and you’ve succeeded. Maybe also watch one of the two Top Gun films and listen to Berlin and Lady Gaga on a loop. But really, you can do whatever you want!
Days like today are when I reshare images from when I went to the Top Gun Bar when I was in San Diego and cried over seeing the piano Goose (Anthony Edwards) played. And that’s what makes being a fan of movies so fun. We make up random days to celebrate our love for things and that’s pretty cool if you ask me.
So spend today listening to beautiful love ballads, wearing jeans on the beach, and wearing as many aviator sunglasses are you possible can. It’s all for the guys and girls of Top Gun!
