We simulated Liverpool's season to get 2021/22 prediction

Liverpool's undefeated start to their Premier League campaign came to an end when they were beaten 3-2 at West Ham United, slipping down to fourth as a result.

But the Reds still look to be in a three-way title challenge with Chelsea and Manchester City, with only four points separating Jurgen Klopp's side in fourth and Thomas Tuchel's team in first.

In attack, Liverpool have been at a different level, scoring 31 goals in 11 league games, with Mohamed Salah currently in the form of his life and the top scorer in the league with 10 goals in 11 matches.

The Reds have already qualified for the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League with two games to spare - winning four from four, including two wins against Atletico Madrid.

There are still 27 matches to play in the Premier League this season, so we decided to simulate the remainder of the campaign on Football Manager 2022 to see what could happen to Liverpool.

Liverpool's season simulated in FM22

Over the course of the season, Salah was the best player at Liverpool as he averaged a rating of 7.53 per game, scoring 20 goals and assisting 10 in all competitions.

Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane were the second, third and fourth best players for the Reds over the campaign, highlighting how good Liverpool's attacking talent were.

The attacking quartet scored a combined 60 goals for Klopp's side in the 2021/22 campaign, more than most teams would get in a season.

At the end of the 2021/22 term, Football Manager 2022 put together an overall best Liverpool XI, based on performances, statistics and other metrics.

This is how the best Liverpool XI looked in 2021/22 according to FM22.

So, how did Liverpool do in the Premier League and cup competitions?

Liverpool's 2021/22 season results

Here’s how the 2021/22 Premier League table looked at the end of May 2022.

Liverpool finished third in the Premier League during the FM22 simulation (Football Manager 2022)

The FM22 simulator predicted that Liverpool would go on to lose a total of nine games in the Premier League, finishing third on 77 points behind Chelsea and the champions, Manchester City.

The Reds had the best defence in the league as they conceded 31 goals in 38 games, but their downfall came at the very end of the season - losing their last four consecutive league games. This was largely due to injuries, with their midfield decimated come the end of the campaign.

Liverpool were unable to win any trophies during 2021/22, with Klopp's side suffering defeats in all three cup competitions, with the most disappointing result coming in the Champions League.

Liverpool were poor in the cup competitions in FM22 (Football Manager 2022)

A 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in the quarter-finals saw Liverpool crash out of the competition, whilst a 2-1 defeat to Wolves saw them exit the FA Cup in the fifth round.

Overall, a promising start to the season collapsed in the second half, with the Reds finishing third in the Premier League and going trophy-less for a second consecutive campaign.

Will the lack of depth in midfield cost the Reds this season? Or will Klopp's side prove this simulation wrong?
