‘We’re risking everything’ CPD Supt. Brown says

After yet another bloody weekend in the city, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown had a response Monday for those who wonder if officers are doing enough: “We’re risking everything.”

To date this year, a total of 65 police officers have been shot at, with 10 of those actually hit, Brown said.

“There’s not a comparable year. That’s five times any previous year that anyone can recall in this city — the number of officers,” Brown said, talking to reporters outside McCormick Place Monday morning.

Brown also sounded a familiar refrain when he expressed his deep frustration that a man arrested in connection with a shooting Saturday in the 100 block of North Pine Avenue, leaving two dead, has several felony convictions and was, at the time of the shooting, out of jail on electronic home monitoring.

“It makes your blood boil,” Brown said.

From 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Sunday, 53 people had been shot, including 10 homicides, Brown said. He also said 87 illegal guns had been taken off the street.

“But make no mistake, we remain focused on making our city safer and taking guns and violent offenders off of our streets,” Brown said.
