'We must end the war': Indonesian president opens G20 summit in Bali

NUSA DUA:Indonesian President Joko Widodo told G20 members to "end the war", in an apparent reference to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as he opened a leaders' summit in Bali on Tuesday.

"Being responsible means creating not zero-sum situations, being responsible here also means that we must end the war. If the war does not end, it will be difficult for the world to move forward," he told leaders ahead of the summit's opening session.

"It's an honour for Indonesia to host the G20 summit, I understand we need huge efforts to be able to sit together in this room," Widodo said in his opening remark.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed at the summit venue by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, ahead of the formal opening of the summit.

"Recover Together, Recover Stronger. Indonesian President @jokowi welcomes PM @narendramodi for the G20 Bali Summit. Detailed deliberations on contemporary global challenges including food & energy security and health are on the @g20org Summit agenda today," spokesperson for the ministry of external affairs Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet.

After the meeting in Indonesia, India will take over the Group of 20 presidency for one year.
