'We'll do all we can to make you proud' - Mourinho message to Tottenham fans in programme notes

Jose Mourinho has told the Tottenham Hotspur fans that his team will "do all we can to make you proud" ahead of the north London derby against Arsenal.

Spurs are struggling for goals right now and welcome their local rivals in what will be a key battle in the race for a Europa League spot.

Mourinho spoke about how his team need to dig deep to close the gap between them and those above them in the Premier League in his programme notes ahead of the derby, with the programme being available to buy digitally here.

Tottenham v Arsenal: Jose Mourinho press conference

Here's what the Spurs boss had to say in his column.

"Good afternoon and ‘welcome back’. I hope you all are continuing to stay well and healthy," he wrote.

"Unfortunately, due to print deadlines and the nature of the fixture list, I am writing this column before our game against Bournemouth, so I am unable to speak about that match.

"Since my last column, we have faced Sheffield United and Everton, with both games bringing differing levels of success for us.

There is no hiding from the fact the 3-1 loss in Sheffield last week was disappointing. The performance was not good enough; we all knew that.

"A lot of people blamed the incident which saw Harry Kane’s goal ruled out when we were 1-0 down, however I wanted us to forget it, move on and focus on improving our performance.

"In the build-up to the Everton game, we spoke about demanding more from each other and not accepting passive attitudes. Our solid performance to secure an important 1-0 win on Monday was a consequence of that.

"I felt we always had the game under control and even in moments where Everton had possession of the ball, we were comfortable defensively. Sometimes it is easy to carry over negative feelings from the weight of a bad performance, however the boys showed a great attitude to put the Sheffield United result right.

"When you need points like we do and you are playing under pressure, it was especially pleasing to see the lads get over the line against a challenging side. We deserved the three points and they were crucial as we have our sights set on finishing in the European positions."

He added: "We will need to dig deep once again this afternoon if we are to close the gap with our rivals. I understand how special today’s game is for the fans.

"I always look to rivals with different eyes and I am looking forward to my first match against Arsenal in charge of this wonderful club.

"After three games behind closed doors here, we are getting acclimatised to our new surroundings.

"Today, however, will feel different without 60,000 of you passionately pushing us on as you always do for a game which means so much to you all. We will do all we can in your absence to make you proud this afternoon as we know we have your continued support from your homes.

"I hope you enjoy the game this afternoon. COYS."
