We compared 10 basic food items in Tesco, Dunnes Stores and more to see which is cheapest

The rising cost of living is hitting Dublin households hard with inflation set to cost the average Irish household €4,000 per year.

One place we're all certainly feeling the pinch is in our shopping baskets with the price of basic food items rising across the board.

We checked out the websites of Tesco, Dunnes Stores, SuperValu and Aldi to find out which one offers the cheapest basic shopping list at the moment.

We've chosen some staples that every home tends to have in their pantries, including; 1 litre of milk, 6 eggs, 40 tea bags, a 200g jar of coffee, 1kg of potatoes, 500g of pasta, a white sliced pan, 1kg of rice, a 400g block of cheese and a 500g tub of butter.

The results are listed below, starting with the cheapest store for these products combined but, as can be seen, it would be possible to get them all for cheaper if you shop around a bit.

Tesco comes out the cheapest with the shopping list above priced at €10.49. Interestingly, the only product it offers that is cheaper than anywhere else is butter though it also has the joint-cheapest milk, tea, coffee, bread and rice.
