Wayne Rooney gives Manchester United Djordje Petrovic transfer endorsement

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has shown how highly he regards Reds transfer target Djordje Petrovic by picking the goalkeeper in his MLS All-Stars squad to take on Arsenal next month.

The Premier League runners-up will travel to DC United's Audi Field on Wednesday, July 19 to take on a squad of MLS players. This week, the 26-man All-Star selection was announced ahead of the game.

Members of the All-Stars squad are selected in different ways. Twelve were chosen thanks to a combined vote from fans, players and the media, 12 were picked by head coach Rooney - given the manager role because the Washington based franchise are hosting the fixture. The other two players were selected by MLS commissioner Don Garber.

Petrovic was one of Rooney's 12 choices to join the squad thanks to an impressive season at New England Revolution. The Serbian has conceded 22 goals in 18 appearances this season, notching six clean sheets in the process.

MEN Sport understands Petrovic is a target of United boss Erik ten Hag. However, United have yet to submit a bid for him and, despite concerns regarding David de Gea's future, the New England man would not be seen as a straight replacement for the Spaniard just yet.

USMNT legend Brad Friedel is a big fan of Petrovic and believes he is good enough to start in the Premier League for United next season. Speaking to OLBG, he said: "I think Djordje Petrovic should be on the radar of Premier League clubs. He could start right now for pretty much any team in Europe, although he has a learning curve of course. I think Petrovic is good enough to start for Man United and Chelsea. People are talking about Man United’s goalkeeper situation a lot, but I’m not sure they have the budget right now for the keepers being mentioned in the papers."
