Waverley paddle steamer pier crash leaves 17 injured amid 'ongoing incident'

17 people have been injured following the Waverley paddle steamer crashed into a pier on the Isle of Arran.

The collision occurred at around 5.15pm this afternoon at Brodick Ferry Terminal, with "a number" taken to hospital.

Emergency services arrived at the scene soon after, including Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service. Coastguard search and rescue teams were also in attendance at the incident.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said it is believed that 213 passengers and 26 crew were onboard at the time of the collision.

A statement from the MCA reads: "HM Coastguard was made aware at 5.28pm today (September 3) of an incident in which a paddle steamer collided with Brodick Pier on the Isle of Arran.

"It is believed that 213 passengers and 26 crew were onboard at the time of the collision.

"17 people have reported injuries, and a number have been taken to hospital."

It continued: "Along with partner agencies we are working to ensure everyone is taken safely from the vessel.

"The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has been informed. The incident is ongoing."
