Watford’s squad have been instructed to stay at a hotel during July by the new coach, Walter Mazzarri, in an attempt to gel before the Premier League season.

The players have stayed at Sopwell House in St Albans, Hertfordshire, since meeting Mazzarri at the start of last week.

“We have been staying in a hotel, going back and forth from the training ground,” said Jerome Sinclair, who joined Watford from Liverpool last month. “We’ve all been staying together but I do not have a place down here anyway so it’s not been much different but for some of the lads, maybe they’re not so keen, but it’s OK.

“We are just taking it as it comes at the moment – we have not been told what’s forthcoming for the future,” the 19-year-old said. “There has been a lot of bonding but it’s a great bunch of lads.”

Mazzarri can speak basic English but is having lessons and has a translator. The 54-year-old, who left his previous managerial post, at Internazionale, in 2014, is working outside Italy for the first time.

“He’s been really clear in getting his ideas across and the players are taking them in,” Sinclair said. “It has not been an issue. There is a whole team of cultures around that can help with all communication needs.

“He’s been really good so far – we have done a lot of tactical work. In training he wants to get the lads organised and playing in his style. It’s a new ideology so he has to really enforce that.”
