Water pipes bursts causing road closure for second time in a year

A burst water main in Balfron has seen a section of the road being forced to shut and repairs could take up to three months to complete.

The pipe burst in Ballochruin Road, near to the bridge there, sometime on Thursday, September 29.

On Friday morning, Scottish Water provided an update, saying that the burst was “not affecting water supplies for customers in the area”.

A full repair began during daylight hours on Friday.

In a statement, Scottish Water said: “Please be aware that you may experience no water supply or low/intermittent water pressure. You may also experience discoloured water.”

They also advised that Ballochruin Road was closed to traffic to ensure the safety of the general public and repair teams.

In an update, Scottish Water this week told the Observer that the latest breach of the pipe is close to the same location a leak occurred last year – sitting on the same pipe at a different section. It is an untreated 48 inch water main and no supplies have been affected.

The spokesperson said: “We are carrying out initial investigations to determine the extent and cause of the damage before carrying out remedial works.

“This will require closing the road and while we have allowed up to 12 weeks for the repair, we anticipate completing it much sooner providing there are no unforeseen circumstances or delays.

“We appreciate this will be inconvenient, but we will do all that we can to mitigate against any disruption while we carry out the work safely.

“We would like to apologise to road users and residents and thank them for their patience and understanding.”

In September last year, we told how the Ballochruin bridge was forced to close after a massive fracture of a water pipe which carries supplies from Loch Katrine to Glasgow.

Ballochruin bridge was out of bounds as Scottish Water carried out repairs to a section of the pipeline which burst there.

The structure, on the Ballochruin Road, C54, was closed after one of the large cast-iron water main pipes fractured. The pipe burst adjacent to the bridge and caused the road surface to subside.

The pipeline carries water from Loch Katrine, near Aberfoyle, all the way to Glasgow.
