Water carrier sent off after sparking brawl in Wasps v Exeter match

There were remarkable scenes in the English Premiership clash between Wasps and Exeter Chiefs as a water carrier was sent off following a brawl between the two sets of players.

The incident erupted as Exeter tried to regather the ball quickly after being awarded a penalty close to the Wasps try line.

But, as an Exeter player moved towards the ball it was nudged away from his grasp by a Wasps water carrier who was stood behind the in goal area.

The player and water carrier momentarily grappled and shoved each other, before Exeter and England lock Johnny Hill also got involved.

Things escalated from there with several players clashing with each other.

Referee Wayne Barnes, taking advice from the TMO, quickly identified the culprit involved, pointing and saying: "That water carrier over there does not come back on the pitch."

Cameras captured the water carrier swiftly departing, while no players were sanctioned for their role in the altercation.

The role of water carriers has received greater scrutiny in recent times, with South Africa receiving criticism for employing rugby chief Rassie Erasmus in the role. Other Springbok water carriers have also been slammed for entering the field of play and haranguing officials.
