WATCH: Tyrann Mathieu mic’d up during Chiefs’ first padded practice

The pads came on at Chiefs training camp for the first time last week and the players were loving it.

In honor of the first padded practice, the Chiefs put a microphone on new safety Tyrann Mathieu. This allowed fans a glimpse at all the sights and sounds of real football being played at training camp. It also allowed fans a look at a new player who is set to be a defensive leader.

The Chiefs posted the video of Honey Badger mic’d up on their social media channels, and you can watch that video down below:

In the video you can see and hear some interactions with the coaching staff, his teammates and the officials who were on the sidelines working practice. It’s a pretty cool video that shows you all the different sides of Mathieu as a teammate and a competitor. I think my favorite part was hearing him communicate with new defensive end Frank Clark.

“Third down, we’ve gotta have it,” Mathieu says to Clark. “Third down, five, we’ve gotta have it. It’s your time, 5! It’s your time, 5! Go hunt! Set that edge, 5, set that edge.”

It’s always good to have someone in your court when you’re on the field. Mathieu was rooting for and encouraging Clark constantly. Mathieu seems to do it whether he’s in the game or on the sideline. You can see and hear that genuine excitement flow through him in the video.

Hopefully we’ll get a few more of these videos from some of the other new players before training camp comes to an end.
