Watch: On this day in 1968, 6 sixes in an over were hit for the first time in cricket by Sir Garfield Sobers

Hitting all six deliveries in an over out of the park is a feat that was first accomplished in cricket at any level on August 31, 1968, when the West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers hit 6 sixes in an over while leading Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in a first-class match of the English County Championship.

Nottingham were 308 for 5 when Sobers walked in to bat and the Caribbean legend moved into the 40s in no time as Malcolm Nash came on to bowl with the score reading 358 for 5. Nash, who normally bowled medium pace, was for some reason asked to bowl spin by his skipper during that match.

And the next six balls he delivered became history.

WATCH SOBERS' SIX SIXES

Sobers, who was looking for quick runs before he could declare the Nottingham innings, was almost dismissed off the fifth ball of Nash's over. Roger Davis caught the big hit at the long-on fence, but he fell over the boundary rope with the ball in his hands.

Over the years since 1968, Ravi Shastri (Ranji Trophy, 1985), Herschelle Gibbs (ODI World Cup, 2007), Yuvraj Singh (T20 World Cup, 2007) and Ross Whiteley (T20 blast) have gone on to hit 6 sixes in recognised competitive cricket.
