Mayor Lori Lightfoot announces new precautionary measures after George Floyd protests

Mayor Lori Lightfoot addresses the George Floyd protests in Chicago on Sunday morning, May 31, 2020. | Facebook

Mayor Lori Lightfoot held a news conference Sunday morning as the city prepared for a third day of protests as outrage continues to pulse across the United States in the wake of the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd.

During the news conference, Lightfoot announced new precautionary measures after Saturday’s demonstrations resulted in violent clashes between protesters and police.

Lightfoot’s remarks Sunday followed her move Saturday night to impose a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as the situation downtown escalated with rioters shattering windows of police cars, tipping one Chicago Police SUV onto its side and setting several on fire.

Lightfoot, who was greeted by protesters Sunday morning outside her Logan Square home, affirmed that the curfew will remain in place “until further notice.”
