Opening statements in the trial of two men charged in the 2015 murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee started Tuesday at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, and the Cook County judge overseeing the proceedings has allowed cameras in the courtroom for the start of high-profile case.

Prosecutors allege that Dwright Boone-Doty shot Tyshawn multiple times after luring the fourth-grader away from a South Side park in November 2015, a targeted killing that was intended as retribution for the killing of the brother of Boone-Doty’s co-defendant, Corey Morgan a few weeks earlier. Tyshawn’s father is a reputed ranking member of a rival street gang, and the boy’s death came amid a feud police say had fueled more than a dozen shootings.

The trial is expected to last three weeks or more. Judge Thaddeus Wilson also has allowed cameras in the courtroom for closing arguments and for a sentencing hearing if either Boone-Doty or Morgan are found guilty.
