Sunak addresses parliament after British-Israeli death confirmed

PA Wire

Rishi Sunak addressed parliament on Monday, 23 October, after returning from his visit to Israel.

He announced £20m in aid for Gaza and said Palestinians are “suffering terribly.”

The prime minister's speech comes after he, Joe Biden, and other world leaders stepped up diplomatic efforts to prevent the Israel-Gaza war from triggering wider bloodshed across the Middle East.

Mr Sunak and the US president, along with the leaders of France, German, Italy and Canada, have called for Israel to abide by international humanitarian law, demanded the release of hostages held by Hamas, and pushed for aid for Gaza.

The joint call came as Israel continues preparations for a ground offensive in Gaza.

Israel struck targets across Gaza over the weekend, targeted two airports in Syria, and a mosque in the occupied West Bank allegedly used by militants.

The Israeli military has traded fire with Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group almost daily since the war began.

The US is wary that Iran’s proxies could be used to spread violence throughout the region.
