The Seattle Seahawks traded up with the New England Patriots to select uber-athletic Mississippi receiver D.K. Metcalf with the final pick in the second round – No. 64 overall.
Metcalf, who many had projected as a mid-first rounder, was extremely emotional when general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll called him on the phone, letting him know he had been selected.
“Why y’all wait so long?” Metcalf cracked between tears.
The big-bodied receiver flew up draft boards after an extremely impressive NFL combine performance. However, he fell back down in the actual draft, giving the Seahawks an opportunity to trade one of the many picks they’d recently acquired in order to snag him.
Shortly after Metcalf was selected, a report came out indicating Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin’s football career might be over.
With Baldwin’s future now in serious jeopardy, Metcalf could be counted on as a big piece of Seattle’s offense as soon as 2019.
