Watch: DJ shows support for under-threat Bristol venues by raving in front of them

A Bristol-based DJ has shared a video of himself raving in front of many of the city's independent venues to show support for them.

It is estimated that 556 grassroots music venues across the UK are at risk of not being able to reopen as a result of coronavirus, including a number in Bristol.

A nationwide campaign was launched by the Music Venue Trust in April to save as many as possible, which has raised more than £1 million to cover their running costs while they are closed.

Swing and bass DJ Mista Trick, whose real name is Richard Hale, wanted to throw his weight behind the #SaveOurVenues initiative and did so by embarking on a raving tour of Bristol.

Watch the video of Richard raving around Bristol below:

On Sunday, May 3 he spent five hours cycling around the city with his girlfriend, stopping off at a total of 19 venues to throw some shapes in front of them.

Since being uploaded to Facebook on Friday (May 8) the video has had more than 20,000 views and 300 shares.

"Venues are a massive part of our culture and they're what makes Bristol so great," said the 35-year-old.

"The venues as well as the fact Bristol is home to the likes of Boomtown and Arcadia are the reason I moved here from London, and I know people who moved here from as far as America for the same reason.

"I wanted to make a funny video to raise awareness for venues and for the Music Venue Trust's campaign. We've already lost LeftBank permanently and I'd hate to see more close for good.

"It was a bit cringe having to rave to music playing from my phone and my partner definitely had a good giggle at me, but the response to it has been really positive so far."

Venues featured in the video include Lakota, The Lanes, Thekla, SWX and the aforementioned Louisiana, to name just a few.

The three Bristol venues signed up to the #SaveOurVenues campaign are Exchange, Louisiana and The Old England, but more than that are expected to be in jeopardy.

Louisiana has raised more than £17,000 in 15 days following widespread support, while owners of Exchange have said their Old Market venue is "safe for now".
