Watch as otter pops head up in North Belfast reservoir

Video footage of an otter swimming in North Belfast has been shared on social media.

An otter was spotted in the Waterworks reservoir near Cavehill on Saturday morning, August 24.

A local resident, Matthew Higgins, was out for a walk when he came across the Lutrinae poking its head up above the waters at around 9am.

He captured the moment on camera and posted the video on Facebook, commenting: "Otters in the Waterworks 9.15am yesterday morning."

Although it's not the first time that the creatures were swimming in the reservoir, it's rare that they are caught on film.

Otters can be spotted at any time of the day, but often it is easier to spot an otter a few hours either side of the low tide when they are active.

It's also not the first time that mammals like these have been spotted in Northern Irish waters - Strangford Lough, Co Down has recently accrued a large population of seals.

In December, it was revealed that numbers of grey seals in the lough had grown due to population increases in Scottish waters and the lough being "the perfect habitat" for them.
