Watch as driver flees from scene after writing off parked car in horror smash

A reckless driver has been captured on CCTV fleeing from the scene of a horrific crash in which he ploughed into a parked car.

Footage shows a dark Peugeot 207 crashing into the back of a Volkswagen Up supermini with such ferocity that the VW was catapulted forward into two other parked motors. As smoke pours from beneath the bonnet of the Peugeot the driver, believed to be a male in his 20s, climbs out.

He then flees to the left of the frame as the alarm on a silver Mitsubishi hatchback is set off. The crash happened on Moorview, Camperdown, north of Newcastle, at around 12.15am on Sunday May 28, writing off the Volkswagen.

The footage, obtained by Chronicle Live, ends as he disappears from view. One local man, who declined to be named, has described how he came upon the wreckage in the early hours.

He said: "It was absolutely shocking, I couldn't believe it. It was so fast that the impact had knocked the car down the street.

"At first I was just worried about the guy because there was a massive crack in the windscreen. I was thinking I hope he's ok, I wouldn't want anyone to be hurt.

"I can't believe he's walked away from it. If it wasn't for the airbags going off in a cloud of smoke he would have went through the windscreen.

"It's quite scary that someone can do that. It's just so irresponsible."

He has called on the man involved to come forward and admit responsibility, adding: "I don't know how someone can lack that much judgement. The best thing to do in that situation is put your hands up and say that was me."

Police arrived on the scene around 15 minutes after the collision took place. A spokesperson for Northumbria Police confirmed enquires to locate the driver are currently ongoing.

They said: "Shortly before 12.30am on Sunday (May 28) we received a report of a collision on Moor View in Camperdown. It was reported that a driver had crashed into a parked car and caused significant damage to others before making off.

"Enquiries are ongoing to locate the driver in question." Anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police, quoting log NP-20230528-0035.
