The embassies of Sri Lanka and Nepal in Thailand, in collaboration with Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, jointly hosted celebrations on Thursday for International Vesak Day 2026, marking the global observance recognised by Unesco and the United Nations.
Sri Lankan Ambassador to Thailand, Edirisinghe Arachchilage Sriyani Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, said during the opening ceremony that the enduring Buddhist values of compassion, empathy, sympathetic joy and equanimity offer guidance for addressing many of the challenges facing the modern world.
She said Buddhism encourages dialogue, mutual respect and unity, reminding humanity of the importance of nurturing compassion both within individuals and among societies.
The ambassador noted that this year’s celebration held special significance as participants gathered not only as representatives of nations and institutions, but also as members of a shared human community transcending borders, cultures and beliefs.
She also highlighted Sri Lanka’s historic role in advocating for the United Nations’ recognition of Vesak Day as an international observance, recalling the diplomatic efforts led by former Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, which resulted in the adoption of a UN General Assembly resolution in 1999 officially recognising Vesak Day internationally.
Nepalese Ambassador to Thailand Dhan Bahadur Oli said Vesak Day symbolises not only an important occasion for Buddhists, but also a universal message of peace for humanity.
He said the event commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha, whose teachings on peace, compassion, wisdom and non-violence continue to inspire people worldwide.
The ambassador added that the occasion held particular significance for Nepal because the Buddha was born in the sacred land of Lumbini.
Mr Oli also praised Thailand for its longstanding role in preserving and promoting Buddhism, saying the deep faith of the Thai people in Buddhist teachings is admired around the world.
