Washington’s new name could come ‘as early as this week;’ to go by Redskins until then

The Washington Football Team announced on Monday morning that they would be retiring the former team name as they transitioned to a new mascot that would last them for the next 100 years. Both Dan Snyder and Ron Rivera are to be working closely on that decision, according to a release from the team.

So when will that decision be made? If it has already been decided, when will we officially hear about it? According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it could be sometime this week.

The hold up might be a legal one, as Snyder works through a trademark battle that has been brought up. Once it was announced that the team planned to change the name, several trademarks were filed for potential names that Washington might use, all by someone outside of the organization.

In the mean time, until a new name is decided on, Washington will still go by the Redskins. Monday’s announcement was more to signify that the name would be retired once a new replacement was found, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson.

When we will find out what that name is? Who knows. Could be as early as this week, or it might take a while.
