The Curse of Rigel DLC is the latest Wartales expansion, which added a new county, Weald exploration, transformation-based units, and various long-form investigation quests. Set in the harsh northern lands of Alazaar, exploring Rigel is like playing a whole new game inside of Wartales. But with so many complex questlines and new systems, it can be quite confusing to progress. So, to help you with that, this guide breaks down everything you need to know to fully complete the Curse of Rigel expansion easily.
How to Start the Curse of Rigel Questline

To begin the DLC, travel to Rigel County, located in the northwestern region of Drombach, within the Kingdom of Alazaar. Rigel is a level 12-15 zone, so entering underleveled is not recommended. Once you enter Rigel, head to the Edelweiss Inn, where the main questline officially begins.
Here, you’ll meet key NPCs tied to the expansion, most notably Captain Osweld of the King’s Knights. After initial dialogue, you need to assist Osweld in combating Lycanthropes, which formally kicks off the hunt for the source of the curse spreading across Rigel.
How to Get Lantern in Wartales
The Lantern is a mandatory tool for exploring the Weald, Rigel’s cursed forest biome. After progressing the main quest and assisting Captain Osweld at King Knight’s Camp, speak with Head Surgeon Magnus.
This unlocks the Lantern quest. You’ll then need to interact with Smith Hedheida, who crafts the Lantern for you after completing a nearby mine investigation involving Lycanthropes. Once completed, you receive the Lantern along with a small amount of Lantern Oil, unlocking exploration of the Weald and the Field Laboratory.
How to Get Lantern Fuel
Lantern Fuel, also known as Lantern Oil, is consumed while exploring the Weald. When the Lantern runs dry, your troop’s mental health rapidly deteriorates, eventually forcing you out of the forest.
Lantern Oil can be obtained in two ways. You can craft it at the Field Laboratory using Weald-specific resources, or you can purchase it from Edua the Witch at the Witch’s Hut inside the Weald. Do note that you can craft Lantern Oil using 1x Grease and 1x Hosberg Nuts at the Workshop after unlocking the Field Laboratory.
How to Get Gloworm Larvae
Gloworm Larvae are rare Weald-exclusive resources used for crafting Lantern Oil and upgrading the Field Laboratory. They spawn randomly while exploring the Weald, especially when traveling without fully lighting the Lantern, which increases risk but improves loot quality. Each pickup yields one to three larvae. Because they are RNG-based, continuously exploring the Weald is the most reliable method for farming them.
All Map Locations (POIs) in the County of Rigel

Rigel is a large county with numerous points of interest tied to quests, contracts, and lore. But, in the Weald, you don't get a compass or directions. So, key locations that you need to know are the ones mentioned below:
- Hosberg (Capital)
- Alor Town
- Munden Town
- Rigel Castle
- Rigel Prison
- Rigel Tomb
Other subquest areas include Edelweiss Inn, Witch’s Hut, Abandoned Mine, Trackers’ Camp, Sommer’s Refuge, Frozen Glade, and Rigel Stables. Each area has unique quests, subquests, NPCs, or crafting/trading options that help you progress,
How to Navigate Weald in Wartales

The Weald is a dangerous, sanity-draining forest biome exclusive to Rigel. While inside, your Lantern determines visibility, type of loot, enemy types, and behavior. Keeping the Lantern lit reduces mental strain and repels enemies, but limits some loot drops. Here are some tips you need to follow:
- Always follow a complete map. As mentioned before, you don't get a compass or directions while in the Weald. Random exploration wastes a ton of resources, so follow a complete map when in the Weald.
- Always carry more than 10 Lantern Fuel. As you explore deeper, you will burn through a lot of Lantern Oil. A common beginner mistake is having 4-5 Lantern fuel and running out mid exploration, thus losing a lot of loot and time.
- Avoid hostile encounters. When in the Weald, more often than not you will see a red silhouette following you, which are hostile Lycanthope. Always avoid fighting them unless you can't at all.
- Carry 4-5 Partial Lycanthope Remedy. You can get the recipe from the NPC in the Weald. This will help you avoid your main teammates from turning into Werewolves by mistake.
Do note that exploring in partial darkness increases loot chances, including Gloworm Larvae, but exposes your troop to ambushes and sanity loss. If mental health reaches zero, your party is forcibly expelled from the Weald.
Field Laboratory Guide for Wartales

The Field Laboratory unlocks after acquiring the Lantern and is central to Rigel’s research mechanics. It allows you to conduct Scientific Research using collected Grafts and Weald materials.
Upgrading the laboratory unlocks permanent perks, Lantern improvements, and recipes along with Lycanthrope-related research and mutations. Each upgrade requires rare Weald items and consumes one Rest, so timing upgrades between expeditions is crucial.
Lycanthropes - How to Find, Recruit, and Train

Lycanthropes appear throughout Rigel during the main storyline and select side quests. Regular Lycanthropes can be captured using Rope, while Hypertrophied Lycanthropes require Chains. Once recruited, they function as transformation-based units with massive damage output and mobility.
Training them requires choosing passives that extend transformation duration and improve survivability. Curing lycanthropy is possible through research, but it permanently removes their unique abilities. For more info, check out our complete guide on Lycanthropes.
How to Recruit and Build Thaumaturge in Wartales

The Thaumaturge is a DLC-exclusive class focused on control and synergy. You can recruit one via faction encounters, convert an existing companion, or start a new DLC campaign with one included. You can also get Legendary class-exclusive gear from Afrid's Arena in the Weald.
Among its specializations, Coordinator is widely considered the strongest due to its ability to enable multiple attacks of opportunity and generate Valour Points. Mixologist and Healer builds are situational but can shine in status-heavy or beast-focused parties. For a detailed build, check out our complete build guide for this class.
How to Complete Pony Quest in Wartales
The Pony quest in Rigel requires finding three lost ponies scattered across the region. One is located above the Woodcutters’ Camp, another below the Frozen Lake, and the third between Sommer’s Refuge, Tules Rock, and the Brotherhood Training Grounds. Returning all three completes the quest and helps your progress in the overall questline.
How to Complete the Ludern Tomb Puzzle in Wartales
The Rigel Tomb features multi-stage fire puzzles and is one of the confusing quests in this DLC. Early doors in the Tombs have riddles on stone pillars, but the final door has murals depicting highlighted circles. Only the yellow-marked fireplaces in the mural must be lit. For the six-fireplace puzzle, the correct pattern corresponds to 10-01-10. Activating these in order unlocks the final chamber.
