Warriors reportedly open to keeping Chris Paul beyond this season

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly open to the idea of retaining Chris Paul beyond the current season. The veteran guard is in the third year of his $120 million contract. However, the final year is non-guaranteed. As such, the Warriors would likely want to negotiate a more reasonable salary for a 39-year-old guard coming off the bench with the second unit.

The report regarding Golden State’s interest came via Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Scotto noted how sources had indicated the Warriors’ interest, as long as they can make the money work for both sides.

“Golden State has been pleased with Paul’s production and fit with the team and is open to keeping him beyond this season for the right price, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote.

The Warrior’s willingness to keep Paul makes sense. Despite his shooting struggles, the veteran guard has been impressive in the season’s opening weeks. He’s defending well, orchestrating the offense and hasn’t lost a step when it comes to breaking down opposing defenses.

Paul has played in 18 games this season so far, averaging 8.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 7.3 assists, shooting 39.9% from the field and 32.8% from 3-point range. As his shooting slump begins to fade, Paul’s overall offensive contributions will rise. Even at such a late stage in his career, there’s no doubt Paul can help the Warriors now and in the seasons to come.
