Warriors pick up Omari Spellman’s option for the 2020-21 season

On a night when the Warriors were embarrassed on their home floor by the Phoenix Suns and Stephen Curry suffered a broken left hand, Omari Spellman got some good news.

According to Logan Murdock of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Warriors have picked up the 2020-21 option on Spellman’s contract. The team had until the conclusion of Oct. 31 to make the decision.

With the Warriors rebuilding this season, it makes sense to put as much energy and effort into developing Spellman as possible. If he can be turned into an everyday contributor, bringing him back next season on a $1.98 million deal makes plenty of sense.

Spellman’s contract status has been a source of conversation over the recent past, especially as the team has dealt with a fair share of injuries to its frontcourt.

Stephen Curry acknowledged that Spellman would have an opportunity to prove his worth, while Spellman took to Instagram to show off that he now weighs 15 pounds lighter than he was during training camp.

It appears the hard work has paid off: The second-year big man will have a job next season. With Curry expected to be sidelined for the foreseeable future and Klay Thompson lost for the season, the Warriors may go into full “talent development” mode this season.

In the long run, Spellman may be a beneficiary.
