- The UK and parts of Europe are preparing to witness a major solar eclipse on Wednesday as the Moon blocks out the Sun. It is the most total solar eclipse in the region since 1999 and will not be matched again for decades.
- Special protective viewing glasses have been sold out in many places for days, with huge queues forming outside shops known to sell them in locations such as Greenwich, London, and Falmouth, Cornwall.
- On Wednesday morning in St Ives, a queue for solar eclipse glasses stretched nearly 200 metres from Techie mobile phone shop.
- Some people travelled from as far as Southampton and Birmingham to locate the specialist glasses at convenience stores in London.
- Experts have urged the public not to look directly at the sun if they don’t have solar glasses – instead making pin hole cameras or using colanders to view the spectacle.
