Warning to Nationwide customers relying on free travel insurance

People who bank with Nationwide are who are planning on taking a foreign break now the UK's travel rules have been changed have been warned to check before they leave.

The Government has announced travel rules will change from October 4, with eight countries taken off the red list and the whole amber list scrapped.

The end of mandatory testing and many fewer people needing to quarantine has seen a huge rise in people booking a foreign break for the end of the year and into next year.

But according to Money Saving Expert, Nationwide is ending its free European travel insurance offer for FlexAccount customers from 31 December.

The bank stopped offering the perk to new customers in 2016 - but customers who had an account before that date still had the free insurance.

That will now end.

MSE says anyone who has paid for annual upgrades, such as to keep the insurance after their 70th birthday or to cover a medical condition, will be able to keep their FlexAccount travel insurance until the upgrade expiry date.

Nationwide says a quarter of existing FlexAccount customers still have the benefit.

A spokesperson for Nationwide said: "We have kept our free European travel insurance in place for longstanding FlexAccount members for five years after removing it for new members in 2016.

"However, with a relatively small proportion of members now meeting the eligibility criteria, we have taken the decision to simplify our proposition and align terms for all FlexAccount members."
