Warning to beach-goers due to high tides over Easter weekend

It's going to be a hot Easter weekend in and around Bristol, with a mini heatwave due to kick in today.

As a result many people will likely head to the beach, and so the RNLI is urging people to be aware of very large spring tides.

Weston-super-Mare Lifeboat Station put out a message via social media in a bid to prevent coastal visitors from being cut off by the sea.

There is a stunning secret beach an hour from Bristol – and it's got a waterfall

They said: "In the Bristol Channel we have the second largest tidal range in the world which results in fast moving currents.

"All areas of Weston Bay, including Brean Down, Sand Bay and Birnbeck Pier, will have particularly fast moving tidal currents."

They also warned people not to attempt to get to Birnbeck Island, underneath the derelict Victorian pier in Weston-super-Mare. People often risk their lives trying to get to the dilapidated pier, with rescue teams called out regularly.

The beaches in the South West where it is 'unsafe to swim'

The warning said: "Remember that Birnbeck Pier is private property but also is extremely dangerous to try to reach either by the pier itself or across the cassie.

"You will quickly find yourself in immediate danger if you try to cross so please take notice and stay away."

The message is that, before you head out, check tide times.

When you are out be aware of your surroundings and the tide's direction.

If you do get cut odd, don't enter the water bur call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

When to avoid the M5 - which will be most congested road in the South West on Good Friday
