Warning issued to passengers as flight prices set to soar after tax review

Tourists will be impacted by rising prices when booking holidays abroad next year, due to plans to increase flight tax, also known as Air Passenger Duty (APD).

Although APD is normally paid by the airlines, the price increases are expected to be reflected in the passenger tickets prices.

Currently, the flight tax costs are divided into two bands - destinations over 2,000 miles and destinations under 2,000 miles.

The APD currently costs between £13 to £180 per flight on commercial trips.

A third, higher, tax band will soon come into effect for the longest flights, which are flights that are 5,500 miles and over.

Upcoming price hikes will mainly impact long-haul flights such as those to South Africa, Australia and Japan.

The idea behind the increase is to help lower CO2 emissions and to assist in improving carbon footprints.

Full plans should be revealed in detail in Rishi Sunak's Autumn budget on Wednesday.

The Chancellor had already warned of a huge rise in taxes across all sectors, mainly a 1.25% National Insurance increase that should go towards a social care levy next April.

The plan is to raise £12 billion extra for care services and the NHS.
