Police scrambled to Glasgow station amid reports of schoolkids crossing railway to get to class

Police were alerted to a train station in Glasgow amid reports schoolchildren were using the railway line as a shortcut to get to school and avoid flooding in the nearby area.

Officers say they responded to reports of youths trespassing on the line near to Summerston train station around 8:30am this morning.

The line serves trains operating on the Glasgow Queen Street to Anniesland via Maryhill route and also trains on the Glasgow to Oban/Mallaig service.

It comes after the pedestrian and car route underneath the railway bridge on Sandbank Street was flooded last night following heavy rains which battered the city.

Glasgow Live reported how two cars were abandoned by their owners after being submerged in the flooding last night.

ScotRail have issued a warning to locals, saying that using the railway as a shortcut is "extremely dangerous as well as illegal". They have also confirmed that police are on site and are working with staff to monitor the area in person and via CCTV.

Taking to Twitter, they wrote: "We're aware of a number of people (including children) using the railway as shortcut to avoid flooding in the Summerston area. This is extremely dangerous as well as illegal.

"The police are on site and are working with our staff to monitor the area in person and via CCTV."

Network Rail Scotland say they have also deployed staff to Summerston station.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Officers received a report of youths trespassing close to Summerston station at 8.30am this morning.

"Trespassing on the railway is extremely dangerous and every year we see hundreds of people taking risks on and around the tracks every year, resulting in tragic consequences or life-changing injuries.

"If you witness someone trespassing, please text us on 61016 or call 999 in an emergency.
