A WARNING for blue-green algae that can be harmful to humans and animals has been issued after it was identified at a beauty spot in the Highlands.
People are being urged to remain cautious when near the water after the algae was spotted in Loch Lochy in Gairlochy, Lochaber, by the Highland Council’s Environmental Health team.
Blue-green algae can be fatal for some animals, including dogs, while it can cause rashes and illness in humans if swallowed.
The local authority’s environmental health team explained that during periods of prolonged warm weather, the chance of blue-green algae, also named cyanobacteria, affecting water courses, particularly ponds, lochs and canals, significantly increases.
The experts added that sometimes blue-green algae can form blooms, which can release toxins into the water, which can have health effects for humans and animals.
The Highland Council Environmental Health Department said a joint investigation with the NHS Highland Public Health Department had been launched after samples taken at Loch Lochy came back showing the presence of blue-green algae.
In a statement, the Highland Council said: “As a precautionary measure, contact with the algal scum should be avoided by people and pets.
“Notices will be posted next to the loch warning that contact with the algal scum should be avoided.”
